Selecting An Online Language Provider
Many people when moving to a new country do not know the language, but have a desire to learn it. While there are traditional language classes conducted in a classroom setting, and language software programs designed to give you a head start in learning, there is another option that is gaining in popularity. Online language providers give people an affordable way to learn a new language –and with so many available — options for learning. However, not all programs are alike and finding one best suited to your needs is not always easy. The best way to select a program is to ask yourself:
Is the website interactive?
Learning a new language can be challenging, but having the appropriate support from tutors and fellow students can make all the difference in mastering a language. Explore the provider’s site and see if they offer interactive discussion boards so that you can communicate with other students, find a tutor, or even pose a question to the instructor.
Is there a recorded speaking component?
Understanding how to write in your new language is just one aspect of communicating. You will obviously want to converse with others as well. To do that, you need to be able to hear how words and phrases are spoken. Find out if the language provider has a recoded speaking component that you can listen to when you want. Also, make sure your computer system is compatible with that format, i.e. Mp3, Midi, CD-ROM, etc.

Are there opportunities to practice what you learn?
Practicing a newly learned language is key to mastering it. The more opportunities you have to practice, the better. Research what resources the language provider provides for practicing such as online message boards, telephone support, discussions with instructor, etc.
Who is teaching?
The instructor/tutor will play a key role in your ability to learn; therefore, you want to find out if your instructor is a native-born speaker, or someone that has at least several years experience teaching that language. If that information is not readily apparent, then do not hesitate to ask.
How is the class structured?
Some online programs allow you to learn at your own pace, logging-in and completing the various required components. Others are more structured, requiring you to complete projects on deadline or learn based on a set schedule. Choose a course that is best suited to your lifestyle and allows you the flexibility you need. Also, be sure to select a class that supports your specific goals. In other words, do you just want to learn basic French or how to converse fluently in Portuguese? Match the class to your needs so that you will be more likely to succeed in mastering your new language.
